This year's crop - five Finnish jazz albums from early 2022

As this year comes to it's last month, it's a good time to look back on this year's jazz releases and revisit old favorites or check out ones you missed at release. Here are five picks of Finnish jazz releases from the first half of 2022 that are still available in the store.

Artist spotlight: Eero Koivistoinen

You can hardly discuss the history and evolution of Finnish jazz without talking about saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen. Since the late 60's his career and recordings document developments and styles from the first Finnish jazz LPs and initial international recognition of Finnish jazz music and musicians to modern days and in 2022 at 76 Koivistoinen remains relevant. Many of his older albums have been reissued in recent years making them again available for jazz vinyl fans and this fall he has released both a new quartet album Diversity and a memoir. Here are five albums I chose from his discography to show the evolution and breadth of his music.

Artist spotlight: Linda Fredriksson

Saxophonist Linda Fredriksson became known outside the Finnish jazz community as member of the bold and exciting trio Mopo, but the success their solo debut Juniper that topped the Finnish physical album charts in the spring of 2022 made them one of the best known currently active Finnish jazz musicians outside of jazz circles. Fredriksson is a versatile saxophonist equally at home in free small combo contexts, as a versatile composer or as a powerful big band or large ensemble soloist. Here is a five album summary of key albums from Fredriksson's discography.
